Japanese Sumi-e Cat Painting
Explore Cat painting with sumi ink onto Rice Paper. in this beginner friendly workshop.
Sumi-e is commonly described as Black ink painting, using sumi ink and washi paper or rice paper.
In Japanese folklore, cats have protective powers and symbolize good fortune, such as the lucky cat! Their curvy body, their flexible movements, active but also calm images attracted countless artists to create their master pieces using our feline friends.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to paint cats of all shapes and sizes with Japanese ink, with some hints of added colours for embellishment. You will learn various brush strokes and painting techniques from our experienced founder, teacher and local Artist UIa Fung. Sumi-e painting is quick and expressive so you’ll get the chance to paint more than one cat. Feel free to bring along photo’s of your own cat(s) too!
We will introduce you to ‘The Four Treasures’ (Bamboo-brush, Ink, Rice-paper, Inkstone) and our teacher will demonstrate the different brushworks.

This workshop is located at GRUB MCR an events space in Manchester City Centre. Street food & drinks of all kinds are available to purchase to munch on as you escape into your cat painting.

Materials (all provided)
• Sumi ink and Japanese paint on rice paper.

• Protective equipment such as aprons.
What to bring
• Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little paint on.
• A carrying bag for take your artworks home.
