Enjoy a tour of Durham’s history in the magnificent setting of Durham’s World Heritage Site and hear local tales and stories from the last 1000 years. Discover why Durham was such an important city in the medieval period, why the Norman had a difficult time and how St Cuthbert helped the city grow.

The tour will take you through the history of Durham over the last 1000 years using the beautiful buildings around Palace Green. Historic Durham Tours unfold the architecture, the history and the stories of the people of Durham to introduce the history of the World Heritage Site. You will be amazed at what you learn from our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, who will explore some interesting historical tales, from Bishop Flambard one of the powerful ‘Prince-Bishops’ who was he first person to be imprisoned in the Tower of London to St. Cuthbert and how in the Second World War he helped protect Durham.

This is an outdoor tour which takes place on Palace Green, the open area between Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, which together make up the World Heritage Site. Other interesting and important buildings which reflect the history of Durham will also be explored in this tour.

The tour will take place in all weather conditions and will last approx. 45 minutes-1 hour. Please note visitors will encounter some sleep inclines and uneven surfaces. Dogs are welcome to join with tour.
